Frequently Asked Questions:

My child had never played baseball or softball before – can they still be a part of Whitefish Bay Little League?

  • YES! We love to have kiddos of all ages and abilities join our league! We are a no-cut program that accommodates players from grade K5 through 8th grade in our different divisions. Click HERE for more information on our different divisions.

When is the Little League Season?

  • Whitefish Bay Little League’s main season is our Spring Season. This season has opening day in Late April or Early May and goes through Late July. General dates for key events for the Spring Season can be found HERE.
  • Whitefish Bay Little League does also have an abbreviated Baseball Fall Ball Season for our 1st through 6th graders that starts at the end of August and goes through Mid to Late October. It is designed for our players that just can’t get enough baseball. Fall Ball season is much less formal. Teams are created without any evaluations. Practices for our fall teams are minimal and team dependent. General dates for key events for the Fall Ball Season can be found HERE.

When is registration?

  • Registration for our Spring season is December through January.
  • Registration for our Fall season is Mid-July through Mid-August.

What equipment is required for my player? Is there anything provided?

  • Each player will need to provide their own glove, helmet, bat, cleats, baseball pants (of any color or style) and athletic protective cup (as applicable). Players will be provided with a team jersey, socks, and hat. Teams are also provided with catcher’s equipment to use during games as needed. Any families who are not financially able to provide the required equipment should contact Whitefish Bay Little League at [email protected] for assistance.

Are there restrictions on the types of bats that can be used?

  • Yes - As of January 1, 2018, Little League Baseball adheres to the USABat standard. All little league approved bats must include the "USA Baseball" stamp. For more information on the USABat standard and a complete list of bats approved through the USABat Standard, visit usabat.com.

What is the schedule for games and practices for the Spring Season?

  • Our PeeWees, Minors, and Majors Divisions typically play 1-2 times per week starting in early May and going through the last week in July. Games occur in the evenings, Monday through Friday and all-day Saturdays and Sundays. Our Minors and Majors Divisions play evening games during the week but limit games on weekends to minimize conflicts with other teams/sports when able. Practices are determined by our volunteer coaches and typically occur weekly depending on the team and division.
  • Our Juniors/Intermediates Division play fewer games – typically 12 games – during the season. These games are usually played both on weekdays and weekends and there are no practices.

What if my child is ready to play but is not yet old enough?

  • Whitefish Bay Little League recognizes that there are some players that are quite young but ready to start playing baseball or softball at a more competitive level. Any K4 players who would like to play in our spring league needs to attend and pass a special safety evaluation prior to the regular player evaluations. This will consist of checking to see not only if the player is physically ready for the game (basic catching, throwing, hitting) but also whether they are mentally ready to pay attention and be safe on the field. In addition, any K4 player who is deemed safe to play will require a parent or guardian to volunteer as an assistant coach and be at all practices and games for the coming season. Any K4 players who are deemed not ready by our Little League board and evaluators will be asked to wait until the following season to start our League. **Note – we do not let players start early in Fall Ball – you must be entering K5 to play in the baseball Fall Season – this is because there are no safety evaluations given prior to our Fall Season.**
  • Unfortunately, Whitefish Bay Little League is not allowing any players younger than K4 to play Little League regardless of their athletic skill. We recognize that they may be ready, but we must draw the line somewhere. (**There have been players in the past who have been younger then K4 and played in the League – that is no longer allowed.**) We recommend that your young enthusiastic ball player join the Whitefish Bay Recreation departments coach pitch/tee ball program until they are old enough to join our league.

What are player evaluations and when do they occur?

  • Player evaluations are a skills assessment that occurs in Mid-February. IT IS NOT A TRY OUT. All players who come to the evaluations are being assessed for skills so that we can work hard to create teams with as much parity as possible. This helps to make our games competitive and fun for our players.

Who must come to evaluations?

  • All new PeeWees players or players who were on a team that disbanded after the previous season should come to evaluations unless they are the child of a Head or Lead Assistant coach.
  • All Minors and Majors players should attend player evaluations unless they are the child of a Head or Lead Assistant coach.

What if my player can not make any of the evaluation times/days?

  • If your PeeWees player cannot make any of the evaluation times/days then they will be automatically assigned to a team. If a Minors or Majors player cannot make any of the evaluation times/days then they will go into the pool and will be selected for a team based on coach’s current knowledge of the player.

I have multiple kids in Little League, will they be on the same team?

  • If siblings are in the same division, they will be automatically placed on the same team.

Can we request to be placed onto a team with a specific coach or friend?

  • Unfortunately, our process to create teams with as much parity as possible does not allow for requests to play for specific coaches or be on teams with friends to be honored.

Once my child is assigned to a team, do they stay with that team for multiple years?

  • Once a player is assigned to a PeeWees team, they are automatically placed back on that team the following year until they age out of the division. If the team is disbanded because there are not enough returning coaches or players, then they will need to attend evaluations to be placed onto a new PeeWees team.
  • All players in other divisions do not stay on the same team from year to year. All teams are fully re-drafted every year.

When I sign up in December, am I registering for both the Spring and Fall Ball Seasons?

  • No – our Spring League is our main Little League Season. Fall ball is a different season which occurs in September through the end of October and is typically only for our baseball PeeWees, Minors, and Majors Divisions. It is designed for our players that just can’t get enough baseball. Registration for Fall Ball occurs in August and the Fall season is much less formal. Teams are created without any evaluations. Practices for our fall teams are minimal and team dependent.
  • Note: To determine what “grade” your child will play for the Fall Season – it is the grade the child will be entering in the coming fall school year.

I lost my hat/bat/glove/helmet/water bottle/bag/etc at the field – is there any way to find it?

  • During the season we do have a lost and found at Craig Council Park near/in the snack shack for any equipment that is turned it. You are welcome to look!
